Greta Giannini
Journal
Greta Giannini, a talented Italian designer, honed her craft at the prestigious Polimoda Fashion School in the heart of Florence. Her creative vision is deeply rooted in celebrating femininity, a hallmark evident in all her remarkable works.
What sets Giannini apart is her unique approach to design. Rather than viewing destruction as an endpoint, she sees it as a genesis—a starting point for something new. Her artistic expression revolves around materials not succumbing to mere wear and tear but instead embracing deconstruction and a subsequent rebirth. This transformative process is particularly evident in her treatment of denim, a versatile canvas that encapsulates the essence of renewal and serves as a guardian of cherished memories.
Giannini’s designs echo a profound desire for renewal and evolution. Through her innovative techniques, she breathes new life into materials, turning them into poignant symbols of resilience and the beauty found in beginnings.
We were fortunate to collaborate with Greta Giannini for the Denim Gallery project, taking the chance to pose a few questions during our collaboration.
How did you find yourself in collaborating with Tonello?
I loved the collaboration with Tonello because they granted me complete freedom to express my creativity. Their reliance on the creative process to introduce innovation into a challenging material like denim truly shines through. It marked my initial encounter with denim, initially daunting due to my perception of it as a “cold” material. However, Tonello’s challenge pushed me beyond my limits, revealing denim as a remarkable canvas for emotive expression and storytelling. Such exploration is only viable when supported by specialists possessing not just expertise but also a passionate commitment. What I particularly admire is their open-minded approach, which, in my view, fuels their innovation alongside the incredible technology and meticulous care devoted to their product.
What did the Denim Gallery experience bring you from a working point of view?
I’m confident it aided in my introduction to the professional sphere as someone who now recognizes the potential within the denim category. Prior to our collaboration, I perceived it as somewhat static and dull. Additionally, in every job interview I attended, there was keen interest in those portfolio pages, likely due to the intrigue surrounding how a company interprets the creative mind of a young student.
Can you tell us what happened to you from both professional and personal point of view in these three years?
After graduating, I secured an internship with an Italian designer renowned for their artistic flair. Despite not being in the best mental state, I undoubtedly learned the magnificence of merging diverse realms—such as fashion, dance, and music—to craft not just a runway show but a genuine artistic performance. Subsequently, I felt the need to return to my roots and family, where I rediscovered myself and had the opportunity to nourish other passions I previously believed I didn’t have time for.
What is your position today? What are you doing now?
I also began working for a historic brand, where I currently am, and where I gained insights into a more industrial approach and the significance of effective teamwork. What truly resonates with me is witnessing how human connections and dialogues can spark fresh ideas at the table.
How do you imagine your personal and professional future? Do you have any upcoming project?
I’m a dreamer, always wanting to do a thousand things at once, so I need to learn how to prioritize. But I also think something’s impossible only until you start doing it. In my mind, I’m envisioning a future that seamlessly blends both my professional and personal life. If you cultivate your passion, work becomes a part of you. No matter how tiring it may be, you just can’t disconnect from it. So, yes, maybe it sounds crazy, but that’s what I aim for. I still have a lot to learn, and I’ll need to improve my technical and managerial skills. But in the future, I’d love to have my own brand.
