Roman Serra
JournalRoman Serra, the London-based multidisciplinary artist and collector originating from Mexico, embodies a vibrant tribute to Mexico’s cultural diversity and the profound interplay between humanity and nature. Their art is a vivid testament to the rich tapestry of Mexican heritage, vividly portraying its vibrancy. With an academic background from esteemed institutions like Central Saint Martins, IED, and the London College Of Fashion, Serra’s passions transcend art, encompassing a zest for life, a deep-rooted enthusiasm for fashion and architecture, and an abiding admiration for Frida Kahlo’s artistic legacy.
In his exploration of today’s world of abundance and instant availability, Serra delves into the concept of excess, examining the value of decadence and maximalism. This exploration materializes through a fusion of various printed and textured fabrics, incorporating elements like embroidery, crochet, and jacquard. Serra’s prints are inspired by his Mexican heritage, celebrating Mexican artisans and craftsmanship, employing hand-blown recycled glass ornaments, handcrafted buttons, and hand-crocheted trims.
Driven by a commitment to eco-conscious fashion production, Serra actively sources materials for the collection from sustainable suppliers or repurposes fabrics discovered during city explorations. The collection is underpinned by support from Candiani Denim, employing sustainable laser technology, washing, and finishing techniques facilitated by Tonello. Additionally, the collection features sustainably produced and printed fabrics, adding depth and authenticity to Serra’s commitment to greener fashion practices.
We had the opportunity to collaborate with Roman on his graduate collection, and during this time, we took the chance to ask him a few questions.
What kind of project did you develop with Tonello?
At Tonello, I introduced the idea of transforming my illustrations into design patterns using their THE Laser technology. With Candiani Denim, we prepped the surface through NoStone®-washing and applied various pigments to the back, unveiling a burst of color as the laser penetrated. We experimented with different pigment levels to achieve varying color exposures.
Seeing my handmade prints come to life on fabric was incredibly fulfilling. My aim was to narrate a story through these garments, and Tonello played a pivotal role in making that vision a reality.
How did you find yourself in collaborating with Tonello?
I was attracted to Tonello because of its pioneering use of cutting-edge technology in sustainable denim finishing, which resonates deeply with my values as a designer. Having the opportunity to shepherd my final project from its initial conception to the finished product and being involved throughout the entire process stands out as one of the most significant moments in my educational and personal journey.
What happened to you from both professional and personal point of view?
Following the presentation of my collection at the graduate show, I seized the chance to collaborate with various creatives in the fashion industry, such as stylists and photographers, creating editorial shoots for both print and digital platforms. Additionally, I’ve engaged in diverse commissions spanning menswear, womenswear, and illustration.
What is your position today? What are you doing now?
In 2019, I initiated my lifestyle brand, R.SERRA, encompassing fashion, accessories, homeware, and jewelry. Situated in East London, I employ a slow fashion approach, emphasizing craftsmanship and handmade items in both design and production. This journey has been remarkable, and I eagerly anticipate its ongoing development and expansion in the future.
How do you imagine your personal and professional future? Do you have any upcoming project?
Currently, I’m gearing up to launch my inaugural fashion collection A/W 2020, featuring both womenswear and menswear. I foresee my brand’s evolution and aim for a robust industry presence. I’d like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the Tonello family for their unwavering support and encouragement throughout our collaboration and beyond. I hope for the chance to cross paths once more in the near future! 🙂
