Mika Mitarai – renowned Japanese fashion designer with a major in fashion design – has made her mark in the fashion industry, collaborating with prominent denim brands. Currently, she moves in the fashion world as a freelancer with extraordinary passion and dedication.
Her design philosophy is reflected in the vibrant metropolis of Tokyo, which she describes as “a vibrant and dynamic place to settle.” For Mika, Tokyo represents a realm of dreams, animated by hardworking people and illuminated by twinkling lights-a city that knows no sleep. Introduction It is a combination of brilliance and determination, sometimes overwhelming but always imbued with energy. Mika admits that time goes by quickly in Tokyo, but his love for the city remains steadfast.
In addition to her excellence in design, Mika is the founder of AkimJapan LLC. This visionary company stands out for its specialization in apparel, offering a wide range of services including branding, consulting, and in-depth industry research. Through AkimJapan LLC, Mika not only demonstrates his skill in design, but also his ability in business and his commitment to shaping the apparel landscape.
We had the privilege of collaborating and meeting Mika Mitarai during the Denim Gallery project, thus taking the opportunity to engage her in a short interview.
What was it like to collaborate with Tonello?
Denim has been an integral part of my life, not only as a garment but as a fusion of fashion and art, a means of personal expression. Collaborating with Tonello has rekindled my passion for art, freeing me from the constraints of commercial design. The creative freedom granted to me during this collaboration stimulated a reevaluation of my creative identity and my way of expressing myself.
What benefits have you gained from the Denim Gallery experience from a business perspective?
This experience has given me a deeper understanding of the creative process and the importance of denim production. Although laser processing and sustainability have gained attention in Japan and Asia, it was only during my involvement with Denim Gallery that I truly understood the importance of the laser process on the environmental sustainability front.
Can you tell us what has changed from your professional and personal point of view in these three years?
After Denim Gallery, I was approached by Chottani to contribute to their denim line, Denim by Premier, marking a significant collaboration for me. On the professional front, I have accumulated years of experience as a freelance designer and also founded my own design company.
On the personal side, despite living in the city, I strive to take time to immerse myself in nature and appreciate moments with animals. This practice serves as a poignant reminder to me of the environmental importance and the crucial role that sustainability plays in the preservation of our planet.
What is your current position? What are you doing now?
I am CEO of AkimJapan LLC, my clothing company based in Tokyo. There we focus not only on denim, but also on creating casual clothing. We operate globally, collaborating extensively with trading companies and various brands. Lately, our focus has shifted toward partnering with brands and influencers on social media, facilitating the production and development of their brands.
How do you imagine your personal and professional future? Do you have any upcoming project?
During the Denim Gallery project, I had the pleasure of meeting a number of incredible personalities. Looking ahead, my aspiration is to forge collaborations with denim professionals and experts from various fields to curate a total denim collection and perhaps even conceive of an exhibition.
In the midst of the global COVID-19 pandemic, I realized how lucky I am in my life. Seeing the shortage of masks, I was prompted to undertake a project aimed at sourcing and distributing masks to those in need. Every day I pray fervently for even the smallest signs of recovery. This experience has instilled in me a deep sense of gratitude for every moment, and through my work, I aspire to contribute to the restoration of beauty in the world. My goal is to instill courage and confidence in people’s lives during these difficult times.
